Today’s featured essential oil is Spearmint

Botanical Name:
Mentha spicata
Plant Part:
Leaf
Country Of Origin:
USA
Method Of Extraction:
Steam Distillation

Carminative

The relaxing properties of spearmint oil help relax the intestines and muscles of the abdominal region, thereby allowing the gases formed in the stomach and the intestines to pass out of the body naturally. This provides relief from many health concerns, including uneasiness and restlessness, insomniaheadaches, stomach aches, indigestion, loss of appetite, chest pain, vomiting, cramps and other related symptoms.

Relieves Stress

This oil has a relaxing and cooling effect on the brain, which removes stress on our cognitive center. It helps people to concentrate, and since it is a cephalic substance, it helps to cure headaches and other stress-related neural problems. This oil is supposed to be good for the overall health and protection of the brain as well.

  • Diffuse to promote focus and uplift mood

Homemade Mint Toothpaste: Mix together, 3 Tbsp coconut oil, 3 Tbsp Baking Soda, 5-10 drops each Peppermint and Spearmint essential oils.

To Freshen Breath: Add 4 drop Spearmint, 2 drops Wild Orange and 2 drops Cinnamon Bark essential oils to either 4 oz of water or 2 Tbsp of coconut oil, swish after brushing.

  • To help support a restful night, diffuse or vaporize 3 drops Spearmint and 3 drops Lemon beside your bed every night.

We offer Blue Spearmint Throat Chakra Candles

Spearmint – This one is the oldest of the Throat Chakra Healing Herbs. It is not the same as peppermint. Spearmint is milder and warmer. This herb can heal energetically. It can be used as an energy tonic for your upper chakras, including the throat chakra. Spearmint is not only energizing, but also relaxing.

A blocked throat chakra can significantly impact your ability to communicate effectively for fear of ridicule and judgement. A throat chakra blockage can also manifest as the inability to express and realize your truth in the world. When the fifth chakra is open and balanced, you are able to express yourself clearly and honestly in any situation with confidence.

Measuring essential oils

Knowing how to calculate dilutions is extremely important for the safe practice of aromatherapy. It’s not enough to simply say “dilute before use on the skin”—this is insufficient information. You need to know which dilutions are safe and how to calculate them.

Properly diluting essential oils provides a measure of safety against topical irritation, sensitivity, photosensitivity, and sensitization.

Robert Tisserand says in this post, “Essential oil dilution is important for two safety reasons. One, to avoid skin reactions: irritation, sensitization, and phototoxicity. Two, to avoid systemic toxicity, such as fetotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity, and neurotoxicity. Adverse skin reactions are obvious when they happen, but systemic toxicities may not be. Skin reactions are totally dilution-dependent, and safety guidelines exist to minimize risk.”

In other words, we dilute essential oils before applying to the skin to minimize adverse reactions and systemic toxicity.

Diluting by Age Group

6 months – 24 months – avoid unless urgent

Please only use for the younger ones in an urgent situation, such as a bee sting or bug bite. Otherwise, avoid using essential oils topically for children under age 2, and use herbs or hydrosols instead.

2 – 6 years – 0.25% Dilution (1 drop per 4 teaspoons of carrier oil)

Hydrosols and herbs are still a good choice for this age group and should be considered before essential oils. Children in this age group have skin that s getting a bit thicker, and their immune systems are maturing, so it is okay to use essential oils if properly diluted.

Over 6 years of age – 1% dilution (1 drop per teaspoon of carrier oil; 6 drops per ounce)

Recommended for children over age 6, pregnant women, elderly adults, those who have sensitive skin, compromised immune systems, or other serious health issues. This is also the dilution you want when you are applying to the face or massaging over a large area of the body.

Average healthy adult – 2% dilution (2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil; 12 drops per ounce)

Ideal for most adults and in most situations. This is also a good dilution for daily skin care.

Temporary health issue – 3% – 10% dilution (2-20 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil; 12-120 drops per ounce)

Today’s featured essential oil is Tagetes

The sedative property of this oil is well known and has been in use for a long time. It sedates inflammation and irritation in the digestive, nervous, excretory, and neurotic systems, as well as convulsions, afflictions, anxiety, stress, depression, anger, panic, and other emotional and psychological hyper reactions.

Eliminates Insects

The Tagetes essential oil is lethal to insects and kills them. Therefore, it keeps away parasitic insects such as mosquitoes, fleas, bed bugs, and lice. Common household insects such as cockroaches, ants, white ants, or termites are also kept away.

Are marigolds and calendula the same thing?
In the case of marigold, pot marigold (Calendula), a native to Europe, and French marigold (Tagetes), an American native in the same family as the daisy, are very different plants. Calendula is edible and often appears on lists of attractive edible flowers. *Most French marigold varieties are not edible.

How to Use Tagetes Essential Oil

  • Tagetes may be applied topically but only in very low dilutions. It can be also be used in the bath, through direct inhalation, or diffuser.
  • Soak the feet in a hot foot bath combined with several drops of tagetes oil to soften calluses and to treat bunions and corns.
  • Add one drop tagetes oil to bathwater to soothe symptoms of cold and flu.
  • Use several drops tagetes oil in vapor therapy to relieve coughing spasms, and dilate bronchial passages.
